Fishing in South Uist

With over 800 lochs and lochans…you will be spoilt for choice! We can organise your fishing for you and obtain permits before you arrive.

There are some 800 lochs and lochans between South Uist and Benbecula and virtually all of them contain wild brown trout.  You can fish the famous lochs of South Uist through either Storas Uibhist or South Uist Angling Club.  Only a certain amount of lochs are available to the South Uist Angling Club.

We can organise your fishing for you and obtain permits before you arrive.

The lochs reserved by Storas Uibhist are some of the most famous wild trout lochs in the world.  Brown trout range from 1lb to 5lb and sea trout can be up to 7lb.  Many of the lochs are ‘machair’ lochs, in which the high alkalinity of the water caused by the shell sand bed produces large and beautifully conditioned trout.  Brown trout season runs from 1st April to 30th September.  Sea trout/salmon season runs from early/mid July to 31st October.  The Estate now runs trips to two hill lochs where the best of brown trout fishing can be found.  There are two trips per week and booking is essential.  One of the lochs is a short distance walk and the other is reached by Argocat.  The cost of these trips range from £130 per day for two people.  Please contact us for details.  You can book your own fishing for brown trout, sea trout and salmon by contacting Storas Uibhist on 01878 700101 or email .

We have a rod room where you can keep your rods and equipment and a drying room for your convenience.  You can freeze your catch to take home or our chef will prepare and cook your fish for you.  And at the end of the day you can sit by the peat fire savouring a good malt and share stories of ‘the one that got away’.

We also hold a gun cabinet in the hotel for safe keeping of your rifles and ammunition.  Information regarding stalking can be found on the Storas Uibhist webiste or phone 01878 700101 for more details.
